About my Artwork

Welcome to my online studio. Here you will find a representative sample of my artwork. My main focus and interest is two-dimensional media such as painting, printmaking, drawing, mixed media, photography, creative graphic design, and digital/computer art.

Still Life (Oil Paintings)

My latest work is a series of Still life oil paintings.

I am attracted to the still life genre as it involves putting together an assemblage of household objects, color, and form into a thematic compositional arrangement.

They are painted on wood panel or art board to ensure the works longevity and they range in dimension from 8.5" x 10" to 20" x 16" inches.

In many of my still life paintings I use a glass of wine as the main character to personify the human spirit. In addition, i am interested in the reflective qualities of glass and how it distorts shape, color, and light. I  am also attracted to the interplay of dramatic chiaroscuro (light and shadow) on shapes and objects.

A number of my still-life paintings are concerned with the
simple joys of life, leisure, and contemplation.

For example "Still-Life with Yellow Flower" is

concerned with nature and can suggest spiritual

growth or ephemeral beauty.

"Liqueur Glass and Pair of Dice" is concerned with leisure time.

It suggests the importance of fun and games or the random or not so random (roll of the dice) experiences in one's life.

In some of my still-life paintings i also allude to other artists or art forms to touch upon a specific theme.

Wine Glass & Michaelangelo

For example in "Wine Glass & Michelangelo" I included two images to represent the cycle of Life and Death, represented by an urn inside a temple and Michelangelo's 'Creation' from the Sistine Ceiling.

These still life paintings are meticulously painted with fine haired brushes and commonly take 4 to 5 weeks to complete depending on the complexity and detail of the composition.

Diptych Paintings: "Inner Dualities"

Generosity & Greed
Generosity & Greed

This series of 10 Diptych paintings (double paneled pieces) on canvas is titled "Inner Dualities". They touch upon the theme of the duality of human existence and stem from an interest in psychology.

The subject matter in these pieces is mostly inspired by the human form, and include portraiture, still life, nature, ordinary objects, art history, and draw upon personal symbols and iconography. In addition, these diptychs integrate the symbolic use of color and shape.

They are based on the Jungian idea that the essence of human life consists of opposite forces and inner states of being that need to be united within the human soul in order to move towards individual wholeness. These inner forces and states of being such "Instinct and Reason", "Love and Hate", "Sacrifice and Hope", etc, are sources of inner struggle as well as inner transformation and power. My aim is to evoke these ambivalent and abstract forces as a means towards psychological growth and as a way to come to terms with the duality of human existence.

They are painted in oil on canvas and also include metallic oxides of bronze, copper, and iron. Each diptych is composed of two distinct panels which are individually framed and are intended to hang next to each other. Each diptych panel measures approximately 10" x 18" inches.

Drawings

Pieta
Pieta

A series of graphite pencil drawings paying homage and inspired by the Renaissance artists Michelangelo. There are also Portrait studies and a few Flower studies done with soft and hard graphite pencils. All drawings are made on archival acid-free paper.

Among the Michelangelo series are Drawings of the prophets "Ezequiel' and "Jeremiah" from the Sistine Ceiling, as well as some of his most well known sculptures such as the "Bruges Madonna" and the "Pieta".

They are idioms of perseverance and metaphors for a new beginning as they were done during a period when I began to fully realize the possibilities of embarking on the journey of art making.

Printmaking

Gift of Life
Gift of Life

In these works on paper i employ a variety of Printmaking techniques such as Etching, Aquatint, Lithography, Monoprint, Collagraph, Serigraphy (Silkscreen), and Mixed Media.

My aim is to explore the human form as metaphor and as a means of exploring the human condition and spirit. As life is a source of wide ranging emotions and their nuances, such as serenity, pathos, melancholy and joy, I try to capture and reflect these feelings and sentiments through the figure.

Mother & Child
Mother & Child

My printmaking falls within three main categories:

1."Celebration of Life", concerns creation.

2. "Remembering the Past", pays homage to ancient cultures and a look back at human origins.

3. "Ideal vs. Real", explores the balance of inner desires with the demands and limitations of human existence.

In these works i attempt to capture life as an experience full of color, form, and texture.
